A Harken internal outhaul with reefing integrates a system that controls the mainsail's outhaul (clew) and allows for reefing (reducing sail area) within the boom. The system uses an internal pulley system, often with a 2:1 or 6:1 purchase, where the line runs inside the boom and through the sail's cringle. For reefing, the outhaul is moved to a pre-rigged reef point on the sail, which is a separate cringle.
How it works
Outhaul:
When sailing, the outhaul line is pulled to flatten the sail and pushed out to make it fuller. The line runs through a block on the sail's clew, back through a sheave inside the boom, and then to a winch or cleat on the mast or boom.
Reefing:
To reduce sail, the mainsail halyard is eased to bring the reefing cringle down to the boom. The outhaul is unhooked from its normal clew position and reattached to the reefing cringle. The reefing line is then tensioned to pull the reefing cringle tight against the boom.
Benefits
Cleaner deck:
The outhaul line is inside the boom, resulting in a cleaner deck.
Ease of use:
Reefing can be performed from the cockpit, and a properly rigged system simplifies the process.
Sail shape:
By adjusting the outhaul, sailors can fine-tune the mainsail's shape for optimal performance.
Safety:
Reduces the need to go on deck in rough weather, creating a safer experience for crew.
Things to consider
Installation: For a proper and efficient system, a professional installation might be recommended.
Sail type: The system is designed for mainsails with reefing cringles.
Sail type: The system is designed for sails that have a luff cringle at the mast and a reefing cringle at the boom.
